Conservative Leader – Poilievre Perceived as More Competent Than Trudeau
National Poll Reveals Poilievre is Perceived as More Competent Than Trudeau.
In a recent national poll conducted by Abacus Data, Federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre emerged as a more competent and judgmentally astute leader compared to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The survey, carried out from May 9-12 and involving 2,500 respondents from across the country, explored various aspects of both leaders, such as their representation of Canadian values, their dedication to improving Canada, and whether they conceal their true views to gain acceptance.
Among the respondents, 48 percent expressed their agreement with Poilievre being a competent leader, surpassing Trudeau’s 42 percent. Only 27 percent believed Trudeau possessed good judgment, whereas 45 percent attributed that quality to Poilievre. However, when it came to kindness, Trudeau scored higher with 58 percent, compared to Poilievre’s 42 percent. In terms of perceived extremism, 35 percent considered Trudeau to be too extreme, while 44 percent held that view about Poilievre.
Regarding their representation of Canadian values, both leaders received similar ratings, with 43 percent agreeing that Trudeau represented Canadian values well and 44 percent believing the same for Poilievre. A comparable trend emerged when respondents were asked about each leader’s genuine commitment to making the country better, as Trudeau garnered 48 percent support and Poilievre captured 50 percent.
Significantly, the poll highlighted a substantial discrepancy between Trudeau and Poilievre concerning the perception of hiding true views for acceptance. While 56 percent of respondents believed Trudeau engaged in such behavior, only 40 percent thought the same about Poilievre. Additionally, when asked about understanding the realities of everyday people, only 30 percent felt Trudeau comprehended life for individuals like them, while 40 percent believed Poilievre possessed that understanding.
Abacus Data’s David Coletto commented on the poll results, suggesting that the Liberals and Trudeau face a challenging road ahead in their competition against Poilievre. Coletto emphasized the importance of both sides focusing on their strengths and addressing perceived weaknesses to appeal to undecided voters. He noted that while Poilievre had a higher number of “don’t knows” among respondents, those with an opinion regarded him as motivated by the right reasons, perceiving him as more competent and possessing better judgment. However, Coletto also identified a vulnerability for Poilievre in terms of being perceived as “too extreme.”
The poll was self-commissioned by Abacus and involved a random sample of panellists invited to complete the survey from partner panels based on the Lucid exchange platform. The margin of error for a comparable probability-based random sample of the same size was noted as plus or minus two percent, 19 times out of 20.
