Trudeau Expected to Step Down As Prime Minister of Canada Come 2023 by Majority of Canadians
Most Canadians want Justin Trudeau to step down as leader, but only some believe he will do so. Half of Canadians want a federal election this year, but only 50% think it will happen.
Canadians appear to have a strange attitude toward politics by the end of 2022.
An end-of-year survey conducted by Ipsos revealed some of these results.
In the poll conducted by Ipsos, 51% of respondents opposed a federal election in 2023, while 49% supported it. Men (51% to 46%) were more likely than women to answer positively. The regions of Atlantic Canada (63%), Alberta (60%) and Saskatchewan and Manitoba (both 55%) showed the most support for a federal vote.
These are the regions where the opinions of Justin Trudeau and his Liberal administration are most and least favourable. There is not much doubt that the Prairie provinces and Atlantic Canada would elect primarily Conservative and Liberal MPs, respectively, unless something remarkably different occurred.
In Ontario, where the results of the next federal election will be determined, things are a little trickier. Only 46% of people in Canada’s most populous province and 40% in Quebec think a federal election should be held in 2023.
Regarding Justin Trudeau, many Canadians across the nation, except Quebec, believe it is time for him to resign. 54% of Canadians believe Trudeau should resign as prime minister and leader of the Liberal Party so that someone else can take over.
The province with the highest amount of support for such a perspective is Alberta (65%), followed by Atlantic Canada (57%), then Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba (57%).
Only 27% of Canadians think Trudeau will take the proverbial walk in the snow, despite the majority wanting him to leave.
Poilievre’s Approval Rating
In the event of an election, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre now has a good 41% approval rating, with 42% of support in Ontario and Atlantic Canada, where the party needs to gain seats. Even though 42% may not seem like much, it is more than the votes he needs to form a majority administration.
Trudeau is unlikely to resign because he seems prepared to fight Poilievre. By the time the budget is presented, it will be clearer whether the Liberals are looking for a reason to compel or call an early vote.
There is little doubt that the upcoming year will be exciting for Canadian federal politics.
The survey of 1004 Canadian adults, conducted from December 14 to 16, is believed to be accurate within 3.5%, 19 times out of 20.
